Patricia Langston rushed toward the entrance and pulled the curtain aside to look outside.
Then she nearly collapsed.
Standing on the front steps were Claire Whitmore and Chloe Whitmore.
Alive.
Beside them stood Dr. Frederick Hayes, Cristina Alvarez, and two police officers waiting silently beneath the flashing patrol lights.
Patricia stumbled backward in terror just as Marcus Whitmore came rushing down the hallway.
The moment he saw his daughters standing outside, his legs gave out completely.
He dropped to his knees and wrapped both girls tightly against his chest while sobs tore out of him uncontrollably.
“How is this possible?” he whispered brokenly.
Claire slowly pulled away and pointed directly toward Patricia and Coraline.
“They tried to kill us, Dad.”
Patricia’s face twisted instantly.
“That’s a lie!” she screamed hysterically. “They’re confused! They’re children!”
But Frederick stepped forward calmly holding the toxicology report in one hand.
“The bottle recovered from the twins’ bedroom contained only extremely powerful sedatives,” he explained. “The girls switched the liquids after realizing someone was poisoning them.”
Marcus slowly turned toward Patricia in disbelief.
“You poisoned my daughters?”
Before Patricia could answer, a horrifying choking sound echoed through the room.
Everyone turned.
