“I thought I was just another overworked doctor—until the night my husband looked me dead in the eyes and said, ‘You’re nobody here.’
Daniel laughed. “Emily, don’t be dramatic. We have a life. We have a contract.”
“We have a prenuptial agreement that you insisted on,” I reminded him, a slow smile spreading across my face. “The one that says any assets brought into the marriage remain separate. This hospital? It’s mine. And your employment contract? It has a ‘morality and loyalty’ clause.”
I walked to the desk in the corner of the private suite, picked up the internal phone, and dialed security.
“This is Dr. Emily Carter,” I said, my eyes locked on Daniel’s. “I need an escort for the former COO. He’s being relieved of his duties, effective immediately.”
The Truth
As security led a cursing, red-faced Daniel out of the private wing, I turned back to my grandfather. He looked older now, the adrenaline fading.
“You lied to me my whole life, Grandpa,” I said softly. “You let me struggle to pay for med school. You let me live in that tiny apartment while you owned this empire.”
Walter took my hand. “I wanted you to love the medicine more than the money. Did I make a mistake?”
I looked at my blood-stained scrubs, then out the window at the city I had spent my life serving. I thought about the “nobody” I was two hours ago, and the woman I was now.
“No,” I said, though the sting of the deception still burned. “But from now on, no more secrets. If I’m going to run this place, I’m doing it my way.”
I walked out of the suite and back toward the ER. I had a shift to finish, and for the first time in my life, I knew exactly who I was.
