My in-laws called me and said, “Join us tonight. We booked a table at the restaurant.”

I tucked the envelope under my arm. I felt lighter than I had in six years. The weight of trying to fit into a family that viewed me as a line item on a ledger had finally snapped.
“As for the car,” I said, looking at Cassidy, “it’s a lease. Under the company name. Since Elliot’s father is the CEO, I’m sure Leonard can explain to you how the repossession process works once I report that an unauthorized driver is using it.”
I turned to go, but stopped and looked back at Josephine one last time.
“By the way,” I said, “the locks are being changed as we speak. Elliot’s things are already in garbage bags on the curb. I’m sure Cassidy won’t mind him crashing on her couch until he finds a place he can actually afford.”
“Audrey!” Josephine barked, her composure fully shattered. “You can’t do this! Think of the scandal!”
“I am thinking of it,” I said with a wink. “I’m thinking it’ll make a great story for the papers. ‘Harrison Heir Homeless After Ambush Divorce Fails.’ Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
The Aftermath
I walked out of Marcello’s into the cool night air. I didn’t look back. I didn’t wait for Elliot to show up and give his rehearsed speech. I didn’t care about his reasons or his apologies.
When I got to my car—the one I’d paid for with my own salary, a detail they’d also overlooked—I sat for a moment in the dark. My phone buzzed. A text from Elliot.
Are you at the restaurant? Mom says things got a little tense. Let’s talk.
I didn’t reply. I just blocked him.
I drove home—to my home—and for the first time in my marriage, I didn’t check to see if the lights were on or if anyone was waiting for me. I didn’t need to. The house was mine, the life was mine, and the only “better choice” made that night was the one I made for myself.
